When the Government of India, Ministry of Tourism, put forth guidelines for the Ministry’s support to promote “wellness” as a niche tourism product, it was a defining moment for the country’s spa and wellness industry and for India itself, and it is likely to lead to a defining moment for our spa and wellness industry globally.
According to the Global Spa and Wellness Summit research presented at the 2011 Summit, there is a huge advantage for spas and wellness businesses everywhere to embrace the “wellness tourism” terminology and separate themselves from the term “medical tourism.” Although a bit oversimplified, think wellness = prevention; medical = surgery.
Fortunately, India can serve as a shining example. It has both a medical tourism industry that welcomes patients across the globe, and now a growing wellness tourism industry where it emphasizes Ayurveda, yoga and meditation.
