Championing Wellness Tourism: India Gets It Right

Have you have ever wondered what the advantage might be for our spa and wellness industry if your government, as well as private sector establishments, were to support and champion the niche of wellness tourism? If so, taking a look at what some governments around the world have done would be worthwhile.

When the Government of India, Ministry of Tourism, put forth guidelines for the Ministry’s support to promote “wellness” as a niche tourism product, it was a defining moment for the country’s spa and wellness industry and for India itself, and it is likely to lead to a defining moment for our spa and wellness industry globally.

According to the Global Spa and Wellness Summit research presented at the 2011 Summit, there is a huge advantage for spas and wellness businesses everywhere to embrace the “wellness tourism” terminology and separate themselves from the term “medical tourism.” Although a bit oversimplified, think wellness = prevention; medical = surgery.

Fortunately, India can serve as a shining example. It has both a medical tourism industry that welcomes patients across the globe, and now a growing wellness tourism industry where it emphasizes Ayurveda, yoga and meditation.

Here are the first two paragraphs from the Government of India, Ministry of Tourism’s three-page document, “Guidelines for the Ministry of Tourism’s Support to Promote ‘Wellness’ as Niche Tourism Product.”

Definition of ‘Wellness Tourism’:
1. ‘Wellness’ is generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being. ‘‘Wellness’ Tourism’ can therefore be defined as travel that involves to experience an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence. In other words, ‘Wellness’ is a view of health that emphasizes the state of the entire being and its ongoing development.

1.1 India has always been known for its rich heritage of ‘Wellness’ traditions and has enormous possibilities to offer to ‘Wellness’ seekers. The Indian ‘Wellness’ industry is one of the fastest growing segment of the travel and leisure industry. India has the potential to become an attractive ‘Wellness’ destination for the global travelers. Therefore, there is need to position India as a centre of ‘Wellness’ that has been an integral part of the Indian way of life. Realizing this potential to develop ‘Wellness’ Tourism as a niche tourism.
