Do you remember hearing your mom mentioning to always eat your greens?
On June 8, 2013, Smoothy’s Juice Bar opened in Alamosa, Colorado on 504 West Ave. (Corner of Hwy 285 and 160), Smoothy’s Juice Bar offers an easy way for you to incorporate your daily intake of greens through tasty smoothies. Donna Chappell decided to open this business mainly for the health of the people. She feels because of her 2 years of owning and managing the Healthy Living Shoppe (also in Alamosa), that she knows the community and what they are asking and looking for, to stay healthy. In this day and age of mounting health care costs people are looking for alternatives to stay healthy and happy.
Smoothy’s Juice Bar offers green and fruit smoothies, wraps, spinach salad, ice cream, milk shakes, coffee and baked goodies. Donna also uses the juice pulp to create a very popular carrot cake that has no refined sugar. Fresh homemade soup may be on the menu as the weather changes. Another asset is the drive thru on the south side of the building for people on the go or if you have called in an order.
For about a year before opening, Donna was asking everyone she came into contact with if they would be interested in a juice bar and received many positive answers. Therefore, she knew people were ready for this venture. The timing was right. Furthermore, Sharron Calvin, a marketing consultant from the Small Business Development Center encouraged and supported her idea as she is also a great proponent of green smoothies and has seen her health only get better from this simple addition.
Donna’s goals for the future are to keep educating people on the value of smoothies and how easy it is to incorporate them into your life. She also plans to offer one hour workshops in her store or perhaps in the hospital.
A basic green smoothie consists of OJ, apple juice, spinach, choice of fruit or banana, but you can also make your own with one fruit, one juice and one green. Furthermore, there are specialties smoothies such as peach almond, blueberry nut and coffee almond breakfast.
Donna draws recipes from these books:
Green Smoothie- Recipes for Living, Loving and Juicing Green by Cressida Elias
Green Smoothie Revolution by Victoria Boutenko
The Healthy Green Drink by Jason Manheim
Her biggest challenge is just getting the word out that Smoothy’s Juice Bar is open. Satisfied customers may be her best advertisement as Donna is already receiving positive feedback.
Also, one of Donna’s employees has lost 13 pounds in 2 months drinking green smoothies every morning. It was a gradual loss but now she watches her food intake more, doesn’t crave sweets as much and feels so much better. Now she won’t go without her smoothie every morning and is feeding her grandbabies, husband, and daughter green smoothies as well.
Have you tried a green smoothie yet? They are sweeter than you may realize. Let’s support Smoothy’s Juice Bar in creating great health in the San Luis Valley. We hope she stays around for a long time.
